Nestled in the southeastern corner of San Francisco, Portola is a neighborhood considered one of the city’s “hidden” communities. Located between Bernal Heights and Bayview, the little-known neighborhood boasts a laid-back, tight-knit community atmosphere, with streets lined with independent bakeries, family-owned pharmacies, and the scenic McLaren Park. Portola takes its name from the old Portola School, which in turn is named after Gaspar de Portula, a Spanish soldier, explorer, and administrator who eventually became the first governor of Alta California. The area was originally settled after the 1906 earthquake, and was populated by families who grew and supplied most of the city’s flower crop. Portola encompasses approximately one square mile in size, and feels as if it’s a small, stand-alone town within the city. While it’s more “under the radar” compared to neighboring communities it shares its borders with, the neighborhood has a lively vibe, which can be experienced in its buzzing commercial thoroughfares such as San Bruno Avenue, a destination lined with a dazzling array of specialty boutiques, unique dining venues, bakeries, and small grocers.
